Picks from SAG Awards 2014

20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

Gretchen Mol looked casual but stunning in her J Mendel white mesh and silk T-shirt gown, a fashionable and clever choice.

rs_634x1024-140118153934-634-Morena-Baccarin-sag-awards.ls.11814_copy_3

Morena Baccarin looked so glamorous in Monique Lhuillier. I love the weaved detailing and the silhouette, it is the perfect shape for her figure and the navy looks super elegant.

rs_634x1024-140118154114-634.hannah-simone-sag-awards-011814

Hannah Simone gets the award for most feminine in her baby blue Marchesa, which is surprising as her character on New Girl is quite the opposite. I love the silk chiffon flowers and the hair style she has chosen to show off the dress. Just lovely.

rs_634x1024-140118155131-634.Anna-Gunn-SAG-Blue-Dress.jl.011814

This midnight blue mesh with black sequins grabbed my attention. Anna Gunn pulls off this simple but elegant Monique Lhuillier dress. I like the halter neckline and the slight mermaid skirt-very statuesque.

rs_634x1024-140118155828-634.holly-huter-sag-awards-011814

Helen Hunter looks great in this pop of colour and I enjoyed seeing a small train. The Randi Rahm dress does take over her a little, I think she could of gone a little more glamorous with her hair style and make up, it is the SAG Awards after all!

rs_634x1024-140118160144-634.jane-krankowski-sag-awards-011814

Jane Krakowski in Roland Mouret-What a great style and fun colour a perfect match to her hair and skin tone. The jade green dress was impeccably tailored and sleek.

rs_634x1024-140118160221-634.sarah-hyland-sag-ls.l11814_copy

Sarah Hyland  wears Pamella Roland. It’s not my favourite design but I thought it was very age appropriate and made her look sweet and charming without being too girly. I also like that she kept it simple and didn’t match it with crazy sparkling jewels.

rs_634x1024-140118162502-634-emila-clarke-sag.ls.11814_copy

Emilia Clarke wore a champagne pink liquid metallic Calvin Klein dress with a single cap sleeve.  It made her look effortlessly beautiful. A simple but elegant choice.

rs_634x1024-140118164022-634-julie-bowen-sag.ls.11814_copy

I am undecided wether or not I like this Carolina Herrera dress that Julie Bowen wore. but it certainly made me look twice. Apparently the burnt orange, brown and white graphic design was inspired by kinetic art. The more I look at it the more I think it maybe does work? Either way it is a nice change of pace for the red carpet.

rocsi-diaz-SAG-Awards-2014-the-jasmine-brand

Rocsi Diaz in Victoria Beckham.  Perhaps a little too much on the simple side but I really like the design and you cant go wrong with a flattering black dress!

rs_634x1024-140118164259-634-Lupita-Nyongo_-sag.ls.11814_copy

Lupita Nyong’o really stands out in this flawless turquoise colour. I love the simplicity of the Gucci design and the floral neckpiece attached beats any jewelry.

rs_634x1024-140118171455-634-amy-adams-sag.ls.11814_copy_2

Amy Adams in Antonio Berardi, this asymmetrical design with the sharp edges sitting against her curvey figure makes for such a flattering outfit and that colbolt blue with her red hair looks stunning! What a goddess.

rs_634x1024-140118172520-600-julia-roberts-sag.ls.11814_copy_2

Julia Roberts in a hot pink jumpsuit by Valentino! Rock on sister, a bold move for the red carpet event!

wenn21004389

Elisabeth Rohm in Marchesa. This dress is full on and borderlines wedding dress with the lace and beading but she gets away with it. I love the fabric and think she looks very sophisticated.

Maria Menounos

Maria Menounos in Oroton. I always love to see gold on the red carpet! and this is a nice juxtaposition with the soft silk chiffon skirt and geometric fitted bodice. A great design I will be adding to my sketch book.

Let me know your thoughts!

Today’s local news….

21 year old 2013 New Zealand Latte Art Champion, Sam Low has recently opened this tiny coffee outlet in Newmarket (tucked in behind Pocket Boutique-off Osbourne St) named Bump. I found out about him through word of mouth and was very impressed at the entrepreneurship of someone so young. I can also honestly say, it was hands down the best Mochachino I have ever had! If you live locally to newmarket, go buy a prepay coffee card -you wont regret it!

Just before Christmas I attended the opening to the hottest new boutique in Auckland- Lana Boutique NZ.

It is a Women’s clothing store with swimwear, hand bags, jewelry, and shoes – all from New Zealand and Australian labels including of course  Amber Whitecliffe. The boutique is located at Mckenzies Shop number 3 on 21 Hurstmere Road , Takapuna. (Next to Mexico and HUFFER).

The interior designer was Kylie Willet from MMD -Mcintosh Moorman Interior design I was super proud of her achievements as we went to uni together!

I went to catch up with Alana Clarke, the owner yesterday and she says that the store’s first week went so well, she has had lots of great feedback since and is looking forward to the year ahead. She also tells me the online store will be going live soon so stay tuned! www.lanaboutique.co.nz The 25-50% summer sale is currently on so go check out the gorgeous store and try on some Amber Whitecliffe garments!!

On Thursday night I took part in a Charity Fashion Show, it felt good chipping in to help such a good cause (more info about it here). I meet some gorgeous girls and enjoyed showing off my Summer Collection Thumbelina to a new crowd of people. Hannah Carson who organized the event managed to raise $1,900.00, which is a pretty good effort for only 2 weeks preparation! Here are a few snaps from the evening….

DIY COFFEE SCRUB

coffee scrub

I have been told by my intern Amy that the “Frank Coffee Scrub” is the new thing this summer! So we did some research on how to make this incredible product yourself-turns out its quite easy!……

“I’m a huge fan of coffee grounds, and not just for your morning cup, but for your body as well” explains Jessica Kernochan, founder of eco beauty brand LaLicious. “The caffeine can help diminish the appearance of cellulite, and the coconut oil will hydrate and smooth your skin to perfection.”

Coffee is good for more than just your morning hit. This DIY Coffee Scrub is good for exfoliating that precious skin of yours, while the caffeine in the coffee grounds may help liven and plump the skin. It just basicaly exfoliates your skin and gets rid of any cellulite, leaving your body summer ready!!

To make your own coffee scrub you will need :

1/2 cup coffee grounds

1/4 cup brown sugar

olive oil

Instructions:

1. While in the shower and after you have already washed the area

2. Apply olive oil to your areas with cellulite.

3. Combine the coffee grounds and brown sugar.

4. Use the coffee scrub on your cellulite areas by moving in circular motions.

5. Let it sit on your legs with the water off.

6. After 10 minutes, simply rinse the mixture off with warm water, pat dry and apply your moisturizer.

By the way, “there is no need to use new coffee grinds, I use USED coffee grinds from my coffee maker and always have. This scrub is quite messy so I recommend using it in the shower vs. the sink. I use it for face and body, then simply rinse it off. No need to moisturize afterwards the olive oil does that for you!”

Here is how it works:  The coffee grounds will stimulate a surface blood flow to the affected area, this will enable the fatty deposits to circulate and over time diminish. The Sea Salt acts as an exfoliator and aids in the blood flow stimulation during the scrub. Finally the Olive Oil is the binding agent for these two dry ingredients and will naturally hydrate the skin.

I havent tried it myself yet, but I plan to this weekend! Enjoy. Can’t wait for the summer holidays!

Much Love, Amber xx

Creative Spaces

light-5IMG_7092-copy-610x457IMG_7175-copy-610x457101513_77-copy-610x457

I have a love/hate relationship with the internet. It is so amazing that it annoys me! How is it humanly possible to just do your work and then sign off, when with a simple click you can discover amazing things that lead to hours of enjoyable distraction! Today I discovered this great site  www.studiohomeonline.com and scrolled through what felt like hundreds of pages. I have chosen my favourite images from Studio Home of inspiring spaces belonging to New Zealanders and Australians in the creative industry. I would kill to have a space like this! one day……..

MS-3sue-7IMG_5221-copy-610x457T3ww-5IMG_7770-copy-610x457IMG_2317-610x457IMG_2323-610x457Ju-Hogan-Sept-2013_5-copy1-610x457IMG_3066-610x457Ju-Hogan-Sept-2013_47-copy1-610x457IMG_3071-610x457IMG_7182-copy-610x457IMG_7977-copy-610x457JH21FR26-610x457f7FR35-610x457

The site was also filled with some great insights of what the owner Julia learnt from each artist she visited:

  • Creativity doesn’t live solely with what is perceived as cool.  It’s important to realise that there are clever, creative brains and hands behind most products in our everyday life – I think that it takes the most clever to design for functional living.
  • Fashion and design is one thing, but to translate that into a career it is vital you have a firm understanding of the realities of business. Marketing, branding, production, logistics, finance. These don’t just happen.
  • Being transparent and sharing your knowledge with others will not break down your brand. Try to avoid looking sideways at your competition and instead work at focussing your energy on building a business that is entirely true to you and your own goals.
  • It’s true – there is safety in numbers….there is also creativity, inspiration, a shoulder to cry on and communal wine. Shared workspace is the way of the future for the solo small creative business.
  • “it’s better to make mistakes on a small scale than on a large one” – so get in and experiment, learn and cut your fingers early so that you build a strong and proven base for your business to grow on.
  • Building the “right” team that gels, communicates and shares an aesthetic will be the difference between a brand and an AWESOME brand.
  • Art can be a business without sacrificing creativity. Go get it done.
  • Change – as scary and as disruptive as it can be, does make way for new opportunity if you choose to be brave enough to take it.
