Can you keep up?

There is so much going on at the moment even I cant keep up!

Thumbelina, the new summer range for 2013/14 was released about 3 weeks ago-and we have had such amazing response to the colourful feminine range. The “Spider dress” has already sold out so we are re-cutting it with a beautiful new lace for the back panel! In November, we are going to be stocked in our first ever boutique, which is exciting. It is a brand new store named Lana Boutique based in Takapuna, Auckland.  Garments from this range, some limited edition items and also favourites from previous ranges will be stocked there.  I have been busy sewing officially, my largest order ever! If I had to pick 5 items from the new summer range to take away for a weeks holiday (ohhh cant wait for a summer holiday!), my choices would be the ones below: The Violet Dress, Maia top, Bluebird shorts, Love top and Tulip dress……

Melbourne Love Affair

Pick 1

Last weekend I went to Melbourne. I actually LOVE that city, it’s such a nice home away from home.  In the last couple of years I have been about 5 times.  Every time I go I try new things. Here are my five favourite places I went to this visit. Pick One above was a gorgeous macaroon store named, A La Folie on Chapel Street.  The treats were really little works of art and every crumb was mouth watering!

Pick 2

Pick Two, ZARA on Bourke street. Do I really need to explain!? Lets just say I got half was through the store, and had to go to the changing rooms because I literally couldn’t walk anymore;I had so many clothes in my hands! This chain store has got to be one the most successful in branding, pricing and design. Zara has created a reputation for stocking a variety of high-end designers’ looks at a fraction of the cost. Did you know that ZARA dispatches new styles globally to all stores twice a week and, if a design does not sell within a week, it is withdrawn and replaced by a new one.  Just incredible.

Pick 3.

Pick Three was a little place we had lunch at called Kazbar, on Chapel Street also. I had a gnocchi salad-hands down the best gnocchi I have ever tried, and amazing service. The waiters were full of life which really made the whole experience a good one.

Pick 4

Pick Four for all you fabric-a-holics, The Fabric Store on Brunswick Street is a must. We do have stores here in New Zealand but the Melbourne one was just a notch up! More fabrics and maybe it was just the timing of when I went in, but I thought a much more exciting collection of cloth too! I picked up a few things which I will be using in my next collection….

Pick 5

Pick Five, of course the Laneways mainly in the city centre. Melbourne wouldn’t be the same without them; known as one of the great street art capitals for its unique expressions of art displayed on approved outdoor locations. I think it is awesome the council have let these areas be a free for all spot. This time I actually got to see some kids at work, making some wicked tags and imagery on the walls. I think it would be awesome if Auckland could adopt something like this.

The Benefits of high quality fabrics

What is a point of difference in Amber Whitecliffe garments?

One of the main things that makes my designs stand out among others is the use of high quality fabrics. I have always chosen good quality fabrics to make my clothes from. Silk, Wool, Cashmere, and Cotton are the main compositions I tend to use.

This came from a combination of my university lecturers always emphasizing the importance of it and working for companies Trelise Cooper and Hawes & Freer, where gorgeous fabrics were the only option. I am not saying I will NEVER use polyester but I try to keep the majority of my collection at a high standard. To me it makes the garments special, luxurious and lasting. These beautiful fabrics are more expensive so I wanted to educate my customers that beyond look and feel there are various benefits of natural fibres. This is why spending the extra dollar is worth it……

The advantages of silk have rightly earned its reputation as the queen of fabrics. Because of its natural protein structure, silk is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics, which means is the best choice of material for people who suffer from asthma or allergies, or those who have sensitive skin prone to irritation. An all-climate fabric, silk is warm and cozy in winter and comfortably cool when temperatures rise. Silk garments thus out perform other fabrics in both summer and winter. Silk worn as a second layer warms without being bulky. Silk will absorb perspiration while letting your skin breathe. In spite of its delicate appearance, silk is relatively robust. Its smooth surface resists soil and odors well. Silk does wrinkles but is easy to iron out, it washes well and dries quickly. The beautiful way silk falls, especially when it is cut on the bias (on the diagonal) just has no comparison. The natural shine that silk has also means the colour of the garment will always stay vibrant and wont fade.

Cashmere is luxurious and fashionable and is also a durable and practical investment. Cashmere travels well and doesn’t wrinkle. It offers great insulation; is warm in the winter and cool in the spring. Cashmere is long lasting and is extremely lightweight and comfortable; it has some natural stretch, meaning that you can move easily when wearing it. It feels so gorgeous on the skin, it actually becomes even softer with age and rarely pills after being worn and washed.  Cashmere is made from the wool of the Kashmir goat, and can take between 3 and 6 fleeces to make one regular sized jumper, with the softest wool coming from the underbelly and the throat.  If it is properly cared for, Cashmere should last a lifetime.

Wool is a breathable fibre that provides instant warmth unlike synthetic materials. It regulates itself to individual body temperature and really is warm in winter whilst cool in summer. It is also a great buffer against rain, wind and snow.  To add to that, wool is naturally water-resistant, repelling moisture vapour through its fibres and making it resistant to rot, mould and mildew. The body stays warm even when it’s wet so if you’re wearing wooly socks and get water in your wellies, your feet will feel much less cold or damp. Added to that, wool’s unique structure means that it won’t allow the build-up of body odours, so you can keep wearing those same socks for days on end. Wool is often used for extreme sports, fishermen, sailors, mountaineers and ski-ers because of its warmth, flexibility and strength. Wool is a highly practical fibre. Easy to clean because dirt sits on the surface of the fibre (and so can be wiped off), it needs very little washing or laundry. It dries quickly and is flame-retardant.

Cotton is the ideal wash-and-wear fabric. Cotton clothing offers a lot of benefits over synthetic material. The main one is the fact that it is also hypoallergenic. Natural fabrics allow for better air circulation, which helps remove and absorb body moisture, drawing heat away from the skin and keeping the body cool and dry. Just like silk and wool cotton breathes better, it’s the best choice to keep you cool in hot, humid weather. Cotton is easy to dye and blend with other fibers. Giving vibrant colours and lovely mixtures like cotton silk. It’s also versatile, and can be used for most types of clothing. Cotton is a long-lasting fabric and the only fiber that becomes stronger when wet. It is the preferred choice in hospitals as it can endure high temperatures and be sterilized.

I hope you found that interesting and informative!  Remember to check the composition tags next time you buy something, it will give you and indication of how long it is going to look brand new and the true value of it.

Much Love,  Amber xx

I have finally made my dream a reality! What an amazing accomplishment. I still have a very long way to go, but I have successfully launched my second range for the Amber Whitecliffe label (with a third just around the corner) and it has already started to sell like hotcakes! After studying, traveling, blogging, interning and working in the fashion industry; I am now working full time on the brand, it has been a nerve-racking but super exciting transition.

New Zealand is such a great platform to start your own business, everyone knows each other and wants to lend a hand. I have had some great support and just wanted to say a huge thank you to each individual who has contributed to my success so far. Please keep buying my clothes, spreading the word and sending positive vibes my way!

Some of you may have found me through Amber & Hilary ( What a journey that was; Hilary and I really enjoyed blogging and were sad to let that go.  But alas we bring you the Amber Whitecliffe blog! This is a little different; it will be a running dialog of fashion news, the Amber Whitecliffe brand, the team and what we are working on and inspired by. We hope you enjoy it and check in regularly!

Now get shopping the new range and go tell everyone where you bought that gorgeous dress.

Much Love,

Amber xx

Amber Whitecliffe Launch

Hooray the website has launched! The show for my very first collection “Cross Roads”, Summer 2013 under my now established label was held last weekend with a high tea style fashion show at Mt Eden Bowling Club. It was alot of fun and such a great way to kick things off!

-Pheonix Cosmetics who did the glam make up!
-Vanity Walk, Red 11 and Nova Models-what a bunch of babes!
-JD Silva Design who helped me design and put together my lookbook and goodie bags
-Julie Cooper, Hilary Johnston, Christina Reid, for their wonderful photography
-Centre of Attention for the cupcake stands and floral arrangements
